Abstract

The angel shark, scientifically known as Squatina californica, is the only species that inhabits along the coast of the Eastern Pacific Ocean. Its main feature is its wide, flattened body, as well as its wing-like fins, which gives it a unique and uncommon appearance among sharks. This species lives on sandy bottoms and feeds mainly on fish associated with the substrate. Its growth is slow, and it reaches a maximum age of 35 years. Its reproductive mode is aplacental viviparous (the embryos remain inside the mother until birth, but there is no umbilical cord to supply the nutrients). This species has commercial relevance, especially in the northwestern Gulf of California, where it represents an important source of high-quality protein. However, due to its intensive use, its population is in danger as it is classified as a near threatened species.
